Huntington, WV (HNN) – Huntington Police Chief Skip Holbrook, Mayor Kim Wolfe, Huntington City Council and the city’s residents have four law enforcement officers of which to be especially proud. An alert midnight shift member observed smoke and alerted 911. Three additional officers responded, one of them Probation Officer Wes Wright.

Chief Holbrook told council and HNN it was Wright’s first night on the job.

Cpl. Jeff Franklin first noticed the smoke during his patrol of Seventh Avenue. He called dispatch tat about 2:05 a.m. Monday to report a fire on the porch of 1516 7th Avenue.

According to Holbrook “routine patrol” by members of the midnight shift led to quick reporting, which prevented the initial smoke from growing to a life and property threatening blaze. Holbrook explained the officers “confirmed there was a fire, call it in, and identified that the bottom half of the duplex was unoccupied, but the upper half was occupied.”

When audible attempts to alert the occupants failed, “the officers forced entry and safety evacuated four adults.”

Describing the heroics of Franklin, rookie patrolman Stephen Maniskas, Greg Moore, and Wright as a sterling example of proactive police work which extends beyond law enforcement duties, Holbrook in a separate published interview stated their actions “represent the police department of the highest standard.” He told HNN after the council meeting, “They performed exceptionally, preserved life, and the fire department quickly extinguished the fire. Nobody got hurt, so that’s a good thing.”
