Huntington, WV (HNN) - Members of Huntington City Council will meet tonight, Dec. 27 at 7:30 p.m. for their final 2010 session. A 7 p.m. work session will precede the meeting.

Two weeks ago, council banned the sale of synthetic marijuana, and, now they are poised to do the same by banning the sale and possession of synthetic cocaine. The drug has been marketed as bath salts at some retailers, but , for instance, one of the ingredients has four times the strength of Ritalin (MDPV). Another ingredient (commonly prescribed for cardiac patients or in anesthesia ) stimulates the central nervous system.

Three first readings may stir debate prior to what will likely be a procedural referral to one or more council committees. The first sponsored by Nate Randolph seeks to provide B & O tax incentives for Huntington businesses. Jim Ritter is sponsoring a modification to the city’s purchasing contracts and vice-chairman (and presumably the 2011 chairman) Mark Bates has proposed random drug tests for city employees.

The agenda contains second readings of a mutual aid agreement with the Catlettsburg Refinery, the erosion and sediment control ordinance for construction sites, the grant purchase of printers enabling law enforcement to issue electronic traffic citations, and a contract to provide natural gas to various city owned buildings.

(Editor’s Note: Due to electronic errors, some agenda postings have actually been the Dec. 13 agenda with Dec. 27 listed as the date. Council has already voted on the Big Sandy Superstore Bonds and (again, even more ironically) turned down the purchase of two new salt spreaders.)
