Parkersburg Tables User Fee until January

Parkersburg, WV (HNN) – Huntington’s three dollar a week user fee for those employed in the city limits has been unpopular from its inception. Intended to provide designated funding for police and paving services, the accounting for the fee has been suspect, although the current Wolfe Administration has been cooperatively transparent.

Speaking before council, the user fee received discussion from taxation without representation folks opposing the proposed occupation tax.

Parkersburg has proposed a $2.50 a week user fee for workers in the city. However, the initiative has led to a few squabbles. A proposal to have the populace vote in a special election has been scuttled by Parkersburg City Attorney, Joe Santer. Originally, deemed as solely a popularity (or unpopularity) tool, Santer told the council after research that neither Parkersburg’s city charter or state law contain a mechanism for such an election.

Although the Parkersburg News article indicated the issue had been tabled, it will come up in January at the next council meeting.
