Marshall came into the the game 7-2 and VMI 7-4. VMI was leading the nation in scoring averaging at 95.5 points per game and getting a vote for the AP top 25. Marshall was coming off a 56-47 win over Savannah State.

With Santa Claus greeting people coming into Henderson Center and the legendary basketball coach Lewis D'Antoni autographing his latest book, the red uniforms of VMI and the green and white of Marshall made it a nice atmosphere before the Christmas Holiday season.

Marshall took the lead from a 2-2 tie and never looked back. VMI kept things close early, but Marshall kept chipping away and had a 35-20 lead with 8:20 left in the first period. VMI did try to make a come back and was down 37-33 with 5:06 left in the first period.

Marshall from that point started to dominate the game defensively and offensively being up 56-40 at the end of the first period. Marshall then went on for the 98-70 win.

If there was any disappointment for the Herd fans it was when Aundra Williams missed his second foul shot that would have given Marshall 99 points. Before that second foul shot cheers of Taco Bell, Taco Bell were coming from some Herd fans.

That is because at 99 points Taco Bell gives a free beefy Taco to those in attendance with game tickets. With an attendance of 4,819 that missed shot may have saved Taco Bell potentially around $4,819.00.

Marshall travels to James Madison for a basketball game on Wednesday night December 22 that might be difficult. Marshall defeated James Madison at home 67-63 on December 7.
