Charleston, WV (HNN) – Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced today that he has awarded $160,909.00 to help victims of sexual assault. He stated the award will identify, provide and expand direct services to sexual assault victims in the State.

An estimated one out of every nine adult women (about 85-thousand women in WV) have been the victim of a sexual assault, yet only about one third of the incidents are reported. These funds will be used to pay for counseling for both adults and children who’ve suffered a sexual assault. The money will also pay for advocacy support.

An advocate walks the victim through the court process and may provide transportation to court or a doctor. The advocate can also help sexual assault victims find employment and housing as well as assist them in getting healthcare and an education.

The funds originate from the Office on Violence Against Women a division of the U.S. Department of Justice. The Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP) grant funds will be administered by the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services, which monitors and provides technical assistance to nine sexual assault programs in the Mountain State.
