Huntington, WV (HNN) - Councilman Scott Caserta succinctly summarized the support for banning synthetic marijuana (and synthetic cocaine) : “Let’s stand and do what we can … to make the lives of our children safer in the City of Huntington.”

Caserta first brought the concern to the governing body after a minor told him of getting high on a product disguised as incense. Following encouragement at the First Reading and committee session from the Cabell County Board of Education , law enforcement, Sen. Evan Jenkins, Del. Don Perdue, and the administration, the sale prohibition received a 9-0 vote (members Frances Jackson, Teresa Loudermilk and Rebecca Thacker were absent .)

The December 13 meeting included the first reading of a similar ban on both the sale and possession of synthetic cocaine. and a resolution to encourage the WV legislature to ban synthetic marijuana.

Council member Jim Ritter said he would take the synthetic marijuana and synthetic cocaine ordinances to the Wayne County Commission and Wayne County Board of Education.

Although the federal drug enforcement agency has agreed to consider synthetic marijuana prohibitions, the determination by the DEA as well as legislative approval will take time. Huntington’s council wanted to be on the front line in prohibiting use of these dangerous substances by minors.

It is expected that an ordinance will be added that bans the possession of synthetic marijuana, too. The wording is not in tonight’s ordinance as it would have resulted in a third reading and delayed enactment.
