Huntington, WV (HNN) - Paving, or lack thereof, makes its way onto the Huntington City Council Finance Committee agenda during a meeting slated at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9 in City Council chambers. The meeting will follow the council work session which begins at 4 p.m.

During a fiscal update, the administration told that some money allocated in a street department “other” line item of $100,000 included paving monies. Another line item contains $500,000 for paving. However, the “other” item has utilized about one-third of the funds for North Edgemont Drive slippage , bridge repairs at Washington Boulevard and a Fourth Avenue sinkhole.

Mark Bates, council vice chairman, found that explanation disappointing, although it appeared to fall within the guidelines for utilization of “user fee” monies. Finance Committee chairman Steve Williams suggested that “paving” become a line item in the budget, which would then require council approval for use of funds.

Not providing these street repairs occurred in the Summer when due to budgetary shortfalls, funds for asphalt were unavailable. The administration has committed to completing the full paving allocation in the Spring of 2011.

The Finance Committee will also discuss computer printer purchases for the law enforcement community (including HPD) and the contract for furnishing natural gas.

Council meets in regular session, Monday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
