Huntington, WV (HNN) – A suit has been filed in connection with the fiery accident on Dec. 3, 2008 that took the lives of Dr. Jeffrey E. George and his daughter, Hannah. Driving a 2004 Suburban, Dr George’s vehicle twice hit a guardrail on I-81 between Buchanan and Natural Bridge in Virginia. The vehicle landed on its side in flames.

Witnesses attempted to pull the occupants from the vehicle, but flames prevented them. The complaint seeks damages from the vehicle's manufacturer.

George, a cardiothoracic surgeon, spent the majority of his career in Huntington. He had been a professor and chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery, department of cardiovascular medicine at Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine; co-medical director of the St. Mary's Heart Institute; and chief of cardiac surgery at St. Mary's Medical Center. He left for a position as a cardiovascular surgeon at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 2006.

Remembered as a physician who knew his patients by name, George often saw family members sleeping in chairs or floors because they did not have a place to stay. He founded the Jeffrey E. George Comfort House in February 2000. About 800 families yearly spend time there while they or a love one is treated at Huntington hospitals.

Following the accident, Rev. Allen Reasons of the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church stated: "So many people are obviously physically living because of what he did for them in surgery. But his care for people went well beyond the physical. He will be remembered first as a friend, and a friend literally to everybody. His demeanor, friendship, compassion, made him deeply respected in the community."

The suit has been filed in Cabell County Circuit Court.
