Goodwill Marks Record Recycling Collections

Huntington, WV (HNN) - Although Goodwill Industries of KYOWVA Area, Inc. has been recycling gently used donations since 1975, public recycling of paper and computer electronics didn’t begin until much later. In 2002, Goodwill began recycling office paper, newspaper and cardboard at its location at 525 West 19th Street in Huntington, primarily for businesses, although the public was encouraged to do the same.

In 2007, the project was expanded to include area public and parochial schools in an effort to educate young people about the importance of recycling. The same year, electronic recycling of computer and computer components also was added out of concern for the impact dumping them has on the environment.

Six schools participated in the School Recycling Project that first year, recycling ten and a half tons of paper and cardboard throughout the school year. In 2010, twenty-four schools are participating. To date, Goodwill has received over thirty-six tons of paper and cardboard from these schools. Additionally, through public recycling efforts, Goodwill has kept a record 641 tons of paper and cardboard out of area landfills.

In 2007 when Goodwill’s e-cycling project began, Goodwill collected and recycled twenty-nine tons of computers, printers, scanners, fax machines, and computer components. That amount increased to over thirty-eight tons the following year, and in 2009 with the new partnership with Dell, it soared to over 103 tons. Now Goodwill’s Dell Reconnect project is on track to collect and recycle a similar amount this year.

Although the City of Huntington doesn’t have a formal recycling program at the present time, Goodwill has made a significant impact over the past few years in keeping recyclable material out of the landfills. These programs also provided jobs for nine individuals in 2010.
