Huntington, WV (HNN) - Several members of the WV Legislature along with Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas and other county representatives will attend Huntington City Council’s Public Safety Committee meeting , Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

“Unless we get some help from other states and counties , We really can’t do it all,” councilman Jim Ritter said. “I had a kid call me and say, ‘you can’t do anything to me.’ A slick attorney would say, there’s no law [originating from the state]. Ritter stressed that WV already has a nearly statewide smoking ban and that a similar ban would be necessary for synthetic marijuana.

City Attorney Scott McClure disagreed at the last council meeting , noting that the city prohibits and regulates items and areas which are not covered by state laws, such as rubbish, drug paraphernalia, juvenile curfews, contraband, and dogs tethering regulations without a state companion laws.

“I think members the Senate and House of Delegates need to send a resolution to Ohio and Kentucky. Tell what they have done. Look what we found. If laws are not passed [in adjacent states] … If we don’t make it a national prohibition, our kids could go down in Kentucky [or over to Ohio] and buy the stuff,” Ritter said. “But it will be nice , for once, to see West Virginia getting things started,” he added.
