Huntington, WV (HNN) - The Huntington Police Department and partner agencies received a unanimous council vote on upgrading portable radios. Council and HPD had re-examined the best bang for the bucks following a last minute “match” that pulled the purchase off the table for more study.

Finance Committee Chairman Steve Williams discussed the proposed bond sale to re-finance the Jean Dean Building liability and undertake significant upgrades at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. His committee had recommended dropping an ‘ice hockey’ specification for a more general ‘infrastructure repairs.’

Bond counsel, Fred Williams, explained that he will advice the Economic Development Authority of the change in the use of the Recovery Zone bonds.

Williams indicated that the preference that does not confine the city to “hockey” likely would prevail as long as a majority of the other bond issuance purposes are met.

During Good and Welfare, Mayor Wolfe confirmed that the city and it’s expert constitutional law attorney, Robert Bastress, will within about two weeks be requesting a meeting with the state home rule board.

A date certain for that meeting was not on the table. However, activists like Tom McCalister , will, if the occupation tax is approved by the home rule board, have 30 days to have petitions in opposition to the occupation tax counted and verified.
