Huntington, WV (HNN) – Sen. Evan Jenkins ran unopposed in his race for Fifth District State Senator. He led all candidates with 18,049 votes. County Clerk Karen Cole, also unopposed, received 17,654 votes.

Kevin Craig (6,304), Carol Miller (6,087) and Jim Morgan (5,660) were re-elected to the 15th Delegate district. Matthew James Woelfel finished a strong fourth (5,451). Patrick Lucas and Douglas Franklin, two challenging Republicans received 4,057 and 3,186 votes each.

Franklin, an ironworker, was a first time candidate.

Kelli Sobonya ( R ) led all of the House of Delegates candidates totaling 8,984 in her bid for re-election in the 16th Delegate District. She and Carol Miller both strongly opposed the constitutionality of the West Virginia Home Rule pilot program and the proposed Huntington occupation tax. In prior interviews, Sobonya revealed that the House version of the program would have mandated a voter referendum by citizens of cities accepted for the program.

The two Republican delegates have also questioned the authority to allow a few select cities to try the home rule concept, when their constitutional reading would disallow that so-called “cherry picking” pilot process.

Democrats Doug Reynolds (7,758) and Dale Stephens (7,018) also won re-election. Some inquiries had surfaced about the health of Mr. Stephens following a stroke. However, city council vice chairman Mark Bates told HNN he just had dinner with Stephens at a local restaurant.

Magistrate Dan Goheen ( D) bested his Republican challenger , Paul Harvey , by nearly 3,000 votes. The actuals had Goheen with 13,015 and Harvey at 10,473.

Cabell County had a voter turnout of 43.74% with a total of 26,033 ballots cast, according to unofficial totals.

In Cabell, Joe Manchin received 14,510 votes to replace the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd and John Raese (R ) received 10,026. Jesse Johnson (Mountain Party) received 395 votes and Jeff Becker received 161 votes.

Incumbent Nick Joe Rahall overcome a serious challenge in the district from former West Virginia Supreme Court judge Elliott “Spike” Maynard. Rahall’s Cabell County total had him with 13,597 votes and Maynard with 11,007.
