CNN’s Joe Johns Worked “RHPS” for Cinema When Attending Marshall

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Listening to CNN tout their most experienced political team on television has a Huntington, WV connection. Correspondent Joe Johns graduated from Marshall. He has spoken at the memorial to those killed in the plane crash. He also is an alumni of Huntington’s “Rocky Horror Picture Shows” at the Cinema Theatre.
Greg Pauley, vice president of the Greater Huntington Theatre Corporation, reminisced about the Huntington history of the midnight screenings.
Pauley and Johns were Marshall students who worked for GHTC. They worked before the Cinema was turned into a four auditorium quad. The Rocky’s were often 850 seat sell outs. Pauley remembers that the theatre sold Rocky material --- such as rice and squirt guns.
The “interactive” portion was not a “shadow cast,” there was not a fully acted “live” group. However, the audience members dressed as characters from the film , shouted responses to on screen antics, and danced the Time Warp, often on a front of the screen floor mixed with rice and other goodies.
Pauley recalled that the first midnight screening occurred at the Camelot Theater (Jesyln’s) and was not well attended. The booking was before the “interactive” and “cult” following had spread.
Although the Huntington runs had peaks and valleys, GHTC Park Place Cinema ran “Rocky Horror” for years. All that time, Pauley managed the merriment.
He still has the “Time Warp” in his blood. Not only did he remind this reporter/photographer to not miss the dance, he admitted that during the digital screen conversion process he had not been an active follower of the Down Home Decadence productions. In fact, he beamed with surprise and delight at the amount of work which these volunteer thespians put into the productions. Bottom line: Pauley stated I didn’t know it took all of this work.
Impressed? Well, he told his wife he was going to just come down and watch a few minutes of the production. Like old time. Pauley left the Cinema only a few minutes before the end credits. He told me he was going to be in trouble with his wife for staying out so late.
