Special to Huntingtonnews.net
Communities in Schools of Cabell County will host a dropout prevention meeting entitled "Connect to Graduate (C2G): Boosting Student Achievement-Connecting Schools with Needed Community Resources."
The "C2G Summit", planned in partnership with Cabell County Schools and the Cabell County Family Resource Network, and co-sponsored by United Way of the River Cities, will take place at the St. Mary's Center for Education on 5th Avenue & 29th Street from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 3, 2010.
According to Ellenda Ward, Executive Director of Communities in Schools of Cabell County, dropout prevention is the responsibility of the entire community, and the C2G Summit is one important step in a larger journey to address dropout prevention in Cabell County. Indirectly, our entire community ultimately suffers each time a young person drops out of school.
"Every community needs to develop a strategic dropout prevention, intervention and recovery plan that focuses community resources, efforts and reforms at the key points where and when students fall off the path to high school graduation. Every community needs to first understand dropout issues and the resources that are currently devoted to ending it, which is the goal of the Connect to Graduate (C2G) Summit" said Ward.
The Connect to Graduate (C2G) Summit will include sharing of the latest dropout prevention data in Cabell County Schools, and a review of what has already been put in place by Cabell County Schools to address dropout prevention by grade level and throughout the school district. Communities in Schools will provide information from the National Dropout Prevention Center on some of the key risk factors for dropout, and will highlight evidence-based strategies for dropout prevention.
"Communities in Schools has worked to get input from school administrators and principals on resource needs and gaps they are seeing in their schools that the community could help to fill. We'll be meeting earlier in the day with county administrators, school principals, and other education and community representatives to kick off that discussion," said Ward.
Student-serving agencies and school parent-teacher groups have been invited to exhibit their program information at a 3 p.m. networking session , followed by a 3:45 public session for educators, families and community members. Participants will have a chance to discuss school needs, resource gaps and promising local efforts in dropout prevention at the Elementary, Middle & High School Levels.
Communities in Schools is the nation's leading dropout prevention organization, and the only one proven to increase graduation rates and decrease dropout rates by surrounding students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
The Connect to Graduate Summit is free and open to Cabell County educators and the public. For more information, contact Ward at cabellcis@gmail.com .
