Southside Elementary School was selected in May as a recipient of the "2010 Inviting School Award" by the International Alliance for Invitational Education (IAIE). Southside Elementary School Principal John Hanna accepted this award on behalf of his school. His wife Lynn, Superintendent William Smith, his wife Vickie Smith, Gerry Sawrey, Laura Cooper, and Allyson Schoenlein joined Hanna at the 2010 IAIE World Conference in Columbus, Ohio on September 29 - October 2.
The school is being recognized because of its implementation of the "Invitational Education" philosophy. This philosophy's approach and thinking are centered around the teaching-learning process which focuses on the positive and negative signals that exist in social interaction. Southside Elementary School has adopted this philosophy whole heartily and has implemented an inviting exchange program for students. To receive this award Southside had to be validated by the IAIE. This validation included a school visit by the IAIE, a recommendation, student responses on the Inviting School Survey and the submission of a school portfolio.
Southside Elementary School Principal John Hanna said that the conference and program could be summed up by a statement he heard there; that this is the "preservation of civilization."
"The People, Places, Programs, Policies and Processes all provide positive messages and intentions that make your school a most inviting place for effective teaching and learning," wrote Dave Chapman, IAIE Executive Director, in a letter announcing the award to John Hanna, Southside Elementary School's principal. "Everyone associated with Southside Elementary School should be proud of the fact that your school has now joined an elite list of schools and districts around the world that prove every day that invitational practices make a positive difference in the lives of our children."
Southside Elementary School has implemented an inviting exchange program that happens every year. This year, Southside is hosting 14 Chinese students and 2 teachers for 10 days. During this time, which will be the week of February 14th, 2011, fifteen community families will house the students and teachers.
Principal Hanna said that the Southside Elementary School parents and volunteers are wonderful. They make welcome signs for the school and invite all parents and to be an active part of their child's education.
"On behalf of everyone affiliated with the International Alliance for Invitational Education, congratulations," continues Chapman. "Your hard work and dedication is a tribute in itself. This recognition is hoped to be a springboard of further implementation of the International Education philosophy and of a growing relationship with the Alliance."
