Huntington, WV (HNN) – Prior to the 6 p.m. Special Call Meeting of City Council, Wednesday, Oct. 6, the Public Safety Committee will discuss the Huntington Police Department’s proposed digital radio upgrade. The Public Safety Committee meets at 5 p.m. in City Council chambers.

The apparent winning bidder of the WVIRP Interoperable Radio System for use by HPD and other agencies had been questioned due to costs of travel for maintenance.

At the September 27 City Council meeting , a representative of F & L Electronics, 235 Fourth Avenue, questioned awarding the low bid to a Cross Lanes firm. The representative contends that Motorola did not have an opportunity to bid on the 211 units. Furthermore, if the Cross Lane firm receives the bid and supplies Kenwood units, the HPD will be simultaneously locked in to traveling to and from the location near Charleston for repairs and maintenance.

The lifetime servicing by the Kanawha County vendor would , in effect, add significant costs from both fuel and payment of officers for travel time, which would take them off the streets.

At 6 p.m. the Special Call meeting of Council will be to pass an ordinance reinstating the $3.00 per week user fee. Due to the delay in the approval of the city’s tax reform plan by the State Home Rule Board, the city must clarify the service fee reinstatement. The service fee would have been repealed October 1, if the occupation tax had become effective.

As it now stands, the occupation tax must first gain approval from the Home Rule Board and , if granted, face a legal challenge as to its constitutionality, which would delay potential implementation for months.
