“Saturday, Sunday, Monday” Private Family Blowup or Family Soap Opera?

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Marshall University’s department of Theatre tackles Eduardo De Filippo's “Saturday , Sunday , Monday,” which intentionally misses family that fights together feasts together warm fuzziness. Instead, Rosa Priore screams that her son Rocco, “Get out [of the kitchen] or I’ll break this plate over your head” followed by “I’ll slap you black and blue if you disrespect your father.”

Essentially, Act One of the play set in Brooklyn in 1985 is the “set up” and Act Three is the “make up.” Despite calling family members a “bunch of bloodsuckers,” the “get over it” segment allows the production to retain a closeness of family despite blaring animosities . According to a 1994 NY Times review, one of its most difficult challenges is to avoid “American hypersensitivity about dysfunction families and abusive relationships.”

Actually, that thin line of family warfare versus abuse (verbal and physical) still baffles . It’s expected that people in close quarters disagree, but when does angry words in retort slip into circumstances where adult protective services may stick their nose into the loudness, yet respect the family’s privacy?

The Marshall production runs Wednesday, Oct 6-9 in the Edwards Playhouse at Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center. Curtain up at 8 p.m.
