Huntington, WV (HNN) – Huntington City Council’s Public Safety Committee will discuss the two attacks on homeless people when it meets Thursday, September 23, at 3 p.m. in City Council Chambers.
Chairwoman Frances Jackson scheduled the meeting to discuss a shooting near a nightclub in downtown Huntington, as well as the homeless incidents.
On Friday, Sept, 17, an apparent verbal altercation led to a juvenile striking the man multiple times to the head and body. Earlier in September, video surfaced on two social networking sites (Facebook, Photobucket) of a teen beating a homeless man at Harris Riverfront Park. Comments posted on the websites indicated they thought it was funny.
A 17-year-old juvenile was charged with malicious wounding in connection with the early September beating.
The National Coalition for the Homeless has reported an increase in hate crimes against the homeless. 80% are committed by assailants under 30 years old.
Following the Public Safety Meeting, Huntington City Council holds its work session at 4 p.m.
A Special Call to vote on the amended Home Rule Plan takes place at 4:45 p.m. The public will be allowed to comment since this is a second reading.
