Saturday Afternoon at the Festival

By Sandee Lloyd

Saturday afternoon was a gorgeous late-summer day and families from all over the area travelled to Barboursville to enjoy the Fall Festival. A field about a block from Route 60 was transformed into an amusement park, complete with lots of rides, games and food concessions provided by the Gambill Amusement Company.

Gambill employee Chris Thomas said the company has two groups that handle small fairs and then come together for the larger fairs. Barboursville has one of the larger fairs and has a large selection of rides for children, teens and adults.

Families were enjoying the rides and games. A couple of little girls stood on the counter and high-fived the game operator after winning prizes by throwing basketballs in his booth. Others were admiring the goldfish they won by throwing balls into bowls of colored water in another game.

The festival is a nice alternative to expensive theme parks, where parents can take their children and let them ride to their hearts' content relatively inexpensively. Nonriders can walk around enjoying the vivid colors and people watching without having to pay for the privilege. It was a reminder of simpler times, when you could visit an amusement park for a nominal fee and walk around just enjoying the festive atmosphere and maybe a treat. Unfortunately those days are long gone but fairs and festivals help rekindle those memories.
