Huntington, WV (HNN) - Eleven of the 13 students in a just-completed welding class have passed their state certification test. The 16-week class in Gas Metal Arc Welding was the latest in a series offered by the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing (RCBI).

"There is an identified shortage of welders -- not just in West Virginia but nationwide -- and we are continuing to work to prepare individuals with proper skills so they are positioned to earn state welding certification and join the work force," said Charlotte Weber, RCBI's Director and CEO. She called the training "a great opportunity for young people, displaced workers and anyone who wishes to expand his or her career opportunities."

The class, conducted at the Cabell County Career Center, was a comprehensive one that included both classroom instruction and hands-on training on the shop floor.

The next welding class to be offered in the series, Stick Pipe Welding, will begin January 10, 2011. It will meet at the Career Center for four hours each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening. For more information or to register, contact RCBI's Larry Cartmill at 304-781-1678, 800-469-RCBI (7224) or send an e-mail to register@rcbi.org. Financial assistance is available to individuals who qualify.
