Attending the ceremony was “Spike” Maynard, a former WV Supreme Court justice and candidate for Congress in the Third District.

“I think this is a good year to be a Republican, a good year to be an American and a good year to be a conservative,” Maynard told HNN following the ribbon cutting.

Acknowledging the state’s Democratic voter majority, Maynard who hopes to unset Nick Rahall, explained, “ We have lots of truly conservative Democrats in WV. They believe in the WV way of life --- they believe in God, they believe in protecting their Second Amendment Rights to keep and bear arms, they believe in Right to Life (that life begins at conception), and keeping American jobs in America. I believe all three of them things as well. And, we love Democrats who share our conservative values.”

Asked for his opponents greatest weaknesses, Maynard mentioned Rahall’s close voting ties to the Obama Administration, which in Maynard’s words, is “waging a war on coal intending to take four out of ten coal jobs from miners in Southern West Virginia” by abolishing surface mining.

“The worst thing about Mr. Rahall is during the 34 years he has been in Congress we have lost 135,000 people out of the Third District. Walk around and look at the empty store fronts in Huntington, you can thank him for some of that,” Maynard said. He added, “Folks in Cabell County may not mine a lot of coal, but they are coal people. Coal is important to this area [as] the railroads and river rely on coal traffic.

When asked to counter Rahall influenced assistance at completing Pullman Square and various Marshall University projects, Maynard explained the enrollment of MU would be much higher if all the aforementioned people had not left the Mountain State to seek employment. “Those people are our brothers, sisters and family members who would like to be here.”

He cautioned that if the anti-Coal Obama agenda passes Congress, it will hurt Huntington. Surface mining, for instance, represents 40% of the state’s coal production. “That would be a huge loss of jobs and a loss of people,” the candidate said.

“Pullman Square is a wonderful addition to the city. I’m going over to Five Guys now, but if we abolish surface mining in West Virginia, there won’t be many people to come to Pullman Square, to downtown Huntington to eat at the really great restaurants, to come to events or shop.

The Democrat turned Republican strongly supports repealing the nationwide healthcare plan known as Obama Care.

“I will vote to repeal Obama care. It’s a terrible, terrible program that will destroy the best medical care delivery system on the planet. Rahall voted for Obama care. The worst thing about Obama care is that it allows federal funding through the use of tax dollars to pay for abortion. Three weeks ago, the Obama Administration gave Pennsylvania $160,000,000 tax dollars to pay for abortions. On top of that, next to Florida, we have the highest median age in the country. Our seniors rely on Medicare for their medical care. This Obama Care mess has cut $500,000,000 out of Medicare that means we will have rationed care for our seniors and in many cases no care [since] lots of doctors won’t see Medicare patients.”

Finally, the Obama Care concept is not reducing insurance costs to those with preexisting conditions.

“That is not happening,” Maynard said. “People who have businesses paying medical [insurance premiums] for people , say, their rates are going up 40 and 50 %. A businessman who owns a trucking company saw his rates increase 48% this billing cycle for the hospitalization and medical care he provides his employees.”

Other candidates at the grand opening were Patrick Lucas and Douglas Franklin ( 15th District), T. Ann See and incumbent Kelli Sobonya ( 16th District), Ann Yon (Cabell County Commission) and Paul Harvey (Magistrate).
