Huntington, WV (HNN) West Virginia won 24-21 over Marshall University coming from being behind 21-6 in the fourth quarter to tie the football game at the end of the fourth quarter 21-21 and to win with a field goal in overtime at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Friday evening.

The attendance of 41,382 set the record of being the largest crowd ever at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Most of this crowd stayed to the very end. Marshall fans were hoping to see for the first time in history a football win over West Virginia and West Virginia fans were hoping to see a miracle comeback. Mountaineer fans got their wish.

The faces of Marshall fans looked bright with smiles and faces of West Virginia fans looked gloomy and in a state of disbelief with Marshall having the lead. That had all reversed at the end of the game as the Marshall field goal missed that would have sent the football game into another overtime.

Give law enforcement credit for one tackle during the game. A man ran out onto the field in the fourth quarter and the police gave chase tackling the man to the ground. He was removed from the field escorted by about seven police officers.

Both the West Virginia band and Marshall band performed at the halftime to the delight of the fans. Looking around the stadium a good contingent of Mountaineer fans had come to the game.

The result of the historical crowd also may have created some of the worst traffic problems the City of Huntington has had to deal with. At midnight game traffic was still heavy. For the most part the traffic was running at a slow pace, but may been running fairly smoothly considering the task at hand.

Some motorists found many of the usual routes were blocked like those crossing Hal Greer Blvd. For example on Ninth Ave. the light was red flashing making traffic difficult to cross at the Hal Greer intersection because there was so much out flow going to I-64 that had the yellow flashing light. Traffic on Ninth Ave. was backed up for about three blocks.

Certainly this historical football game will be remembered for many years with many stories and memories and likely will be remembered as one of the best college football games in history.
