Greenup County Fair

Saturday was closing day for the 2010 Greenup County Fair, and the weather was perfect. Fairgoers were enjoying the cooler air with a hint of autumn as they sampled the traditional fair goodies, enjoyed the rides and walked the midway.
Auctioneer Cavel Bush worked the crowds to get the highest bids for the
prize-winning animals being walked around in the ring by their proud owners. The
owners wore signs on their backs with the animal's number and weight, and the
animals had the number painted on their side. The bidding was lively and the
owners went away happy with the outcome.
Most of the animals went docilely to the show ring, although occasionally one balked and didn't want to go in, but the owner calmed it down and convinced it to walk into the show area.
The animal pens were decorated with signs thanking last year's buyers and with ribbons won by this year's entries. Many of the pens had signs with pictures of the owners and their animal or with cute drawings and witty sayings. Among those showing animals was Austin Caskey with his feeder pig Petunia and Johnathon Cox and his cow Dallas, who won the purple rosette for Best in Class as well as other awards.
In the rabbit and poultry barn prize-winning lop-eared rabbits owned by Taylor Hannah were getting lots of attention. They were beautiful with thick brown and white coats. There were lots of rabbits being caged as their time at the fair was over. The chickens seemed to be taking well-earned rests from all the activity.
The exhibition building had exhibits of produce, canning, and baking in the food section, and crafts of every description in their area. Photography, painting and drawings were on display, as well as exquisite quilts. In the floral area were two huge plants grown by Lucy Sperry, who at 99 years of age is still exhibiting at the fair. Her plants won blue ribbons and were beautiful specimens. Ms. Sperry will turn 100 in December, and is a member of the Malorton Homemakers Club. There were a number of other prize-winning flowers and arrangements too.
In the show area folks were getting ready for the antique tractor pull. The tractors were lined up for display. They may have been older models but were still in good shape and lots of fun to see. One man was doing wheelies on a little four-wheeled vehicle. Some folks were riding around on their tractors and I couldn't help but wonder if the ladies found the tractors sexy.
Earlier in the week it must have been hot enough to fry bacon, as there was a jeep with a piece of fried bacon on its fender.
Casey's provided the rides and they brought a nice assortment for all ages. All the rides are brightly colored and in good shape. Fairgoers seemed to be having a good time on all of them. There was a nice assortment of food vendors offering just about anything you could want and the delightful smells wafted through the fairgrounds.
Local churches and organizations sponsored booths, the 4H clubs had elaborate displays, and not to be missed was Psychic Hal, with his miniature wishing well.
The organizers of the fair are to be congratulated on a job well done. I look forward to next year's fair.
The pictures show Cavel Bush, Austin Caskey and Petunia, Johnathon Cox and Dallas, Taylor Hannah and his rabbits, Lucy Sperry's plants, Psychic Hal's wishing well, folks enjoying the fair, rides and vendors.
