Huntington, WV (HNN) – About 6,700 Cabell County voters turned out in the special primary election to determine the Democratic and Republican nominee to fill the U..S. Senate seat occupied by the late Robert C. Byrd.
John R. Raese pulled 1,798 votes (77.20%) with Mac Warner receiving just 216 (9.27%) of the Cabell County Republican vote.
Gov. Joe Manchin III received 3,530 (80%) to Ken Heckler’s 633 (14.4%). The 95-year-old former Congressman who used the primary campaign as a soapbox against Mountain Top Removal received better than expected response.
Although not all statewide votes have been counted Raese and Manchin will be facing off in the general election. Estimates of winning statewide percentages have not been finalized but early totals have both candidates each winning more than 75% of the vote.
