Boyd County Fair

By Sandee Lloyd

The Boyd County Fair wrapped up its run with Bluegrass music and a demolition derby on Saturday. This year's fair featured carnival rides by Casey's Rides, 4-H and agriculture exhibits, pageants, animals, concerts, horses, mudbogs, a rodeo, lots of vendors, Boyd County Idol, and demolition derbies.

Each evening was packed with fun things for the whole family. On the midway you could ride traditional rides like the carousel and Ferris wheel or for the strong of heart and stomach the Superman, Hurricane and Outer Limits. There were plenty of rides for the younger children too such as a dragon roller coaster and a ride featuring cartoon character-shaped seats.

One of the most popular attractions seemed to be the bungee jumping. Among the children having fun were Westwood's Megan Adkins and Greenup's Brett Gumbert demonstrating their athletic abilities by doing flips in midair. Others were content to just see how high they could jump.

Bible Baptist Church had an interesting booth with several interactive question and answer displays, informational signs and a partial suit of armor. They were also giving away Bibles and religious tracts.

You could truly say politicians are all wet as they took their turns in the dunking booth for the Summit Ironville Volunteer Fire Department.

Psychic Hal was there to do readings. He had signs posted that he had done readings for a number of celebrities and had been at the original Woodstock.

Inside the Building of Dreams were vendors selling all kinds of crafts and Hometown Hero Greg Goode Sr. doing face painting and animal balloons. When I was there he was finishing a colorful horse on the cheek of Anastasia Adkins and had completed a beautiful butterfly on Brodie Miller's face.

Mr. Goode is a volunteer for the Ceredo-Kenova Public Library and has received numerous awards, including the Volunteer of the Year Award. He also teaches IT classes at the library and other locations. He was named a Hometown Hero for his volunteer work.

In classic carny style was a trailer with signs proclaiming "See the strange thing" and "The world famous IT" and other signs with similar come-ons. Being a natural cynic, I figured the customer would look in and see a mirror, but I wasn't going to waste money to find out. A group of people was standing there peering in for several minutes, so there must have been something worth seeing.

County fairs are a great way for communities to get together and show off their hard work while letting loose and having some fun.

Pictures show Megan Adkins and Brett Gumbert doing flips on the bungee cords, Greg Goode, Sr. painting Megan Adkins' cheek, Brodie Miller with her butterfly face paint, rides, fairgoers and vendors.
