Huntington, WV (HNN) – Scorching temperatures turned to strong thundershowers which brought significant flooding and traffic congestion Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 11. The storm hit just after 4 p.m.

Underpasses flooded separating the city unless you took winding detours which often brought more water issues. However, the blocked roads were not simply at the lower portion of the underpass; the water clogged the roads clear to the turn off traffic light in some instances.

Marshall University found its Fifth Avenue and 18th Street intersection (near the Campus Christian Center and Memorial Student Center) flooded and elevated water encompassed the thoroughfare to Gino’s Pub.

Four Pole Creek rose out of its banks covering North Boulevard.

One person told HNN that this was “the worst flooding” seen, while another called it “the quickest.”

The First Street viaduct reopened at 6:30 p.m., but rumbles of thunder continued.
