Tri-State Literacy Council Looking for Volunteer Tutors to Serve Growing Need
Special to Huntingtonnews.net
Huntington, WV (HNN) – Tri-State Literacy Council offers free tutor training for volunteers interested in teaching adults who want to improve their reading. Training sessions will be held evenings from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on August 2, 3, 9, and 10 at the Cabell County Public Library.
“The number of students requesting help has gone up,” according to Lynn Ormiston, program director, “and so has our need for more volunteers. Students currently are available in Huntington, Barboursville, Milton, and Wayne.”
Volunteers may choose traditional one-to-one tutoring or small group or workplace tutoring. Tutors meet their students once a week for one to two hours and are asked to commit to at least one year. Successful tutors are capable readers and have strong people skills.
Volunteers are needed for all literacy levels—from basic literacy to pre-GED preparation—including math.
“Many adult learners are beginning readers, and their tutoring experience opens the doors to a new world for them. Others, including several young-adult learners, are working toward completing their education, hoping to obtain a GED and to find a job. Tutors can help support their efforts and, in some cases, speed up the process,” Ormiston says. “Our volunteer tutors have the opportunity to make a substantial difference in one person’s life. Tutoring is a challenging learning experience for the student and the tutor.”
For more information, call 304-528-5700 or e-mail literacy@cabell.lib.wv.us. Pre-registration is required.
