Huntington, WV (HNN) – Mountain State Center for Independent Living holds their seventh annual Walk for Independence, Saturday, July 17, at Huntington’s Ritter Park. Sign in begins at 8 a.m. and all are welcome to share the common goal --- opening door to greater individual freedom.
Nathan Parker, a member of the MSCIL board of directors said that funds raised go “so people can (overcome) barriers” and for home modification, hearing aids, and other essentials. “We will be at the shelter, anyone who wants to walk or donate” is welcome, Parker explained.
Two of the 2010 fundraising goals are to “buy computers to teach people how to operate them and buy stoves so people can learn how to cook healthy meals,” Parker said.
In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Parker will be one of the delegates to the annual National Council for Independent Living, July 19-23, in Washington, D.C.
The conference provides workshops on federal disability issues including a “day on the hill,” where delegates visit the offices of representatives and senators.
Ten years ago, Rebecca Thacker attended the 10th ADA anniversary conference in Washington.
“They gave us materials on how to become independent and live as independently as possible,” the now councilwoman Thacker explained. “Within a month of my return, I was married, on my own and living in my own apartment.”
Parker has a visual impairment. He has learned assistive technology (such as fire safety) and tenant rights. Thirty years after graduating from high school, he returned to college and made the Dean’s List.
“We are not labels, we are persons that have a disability,” he said, adding, “we are productive and we can make things happen in government.”
