Today 97% of the affected Communications Workers of America (CWA) members voted in favor of ratifying a labor agreement with Frontier Communications, which was initially announced on June 15.

Frontier Communications purchased Verizon phone line operations in West Virginia, and 13 other states, in June after months of negotiations and regulatory hearings. CWA opposed the Verizon-Frontier sale until an agreement with Frontier was reached in June. As part of the sale Frontier agreed to honor the labor contracts employees previously had with Verizon.

The ratified agreement extends employees’ current contracts through August 2013. Under the terms of the agreement wages will increase by 2.75 percent in 2011 and by 2.5 percent in 2012. It also requires Frontier to keep at least 1,600 full-time workers in West Virginia.

“We worked hard to come to an agreement that was fair for all and of benefit to our members,” said CWA International Representative, Elaine Harris. “I’m glad the overwhelming majority of our members agreed and voted to ratify this contract.”
