Fire Closes Washington Avenue in West Huntington

Huntington, WV (HNN) – A detour has been imposed on West bound traffic on Washington Avenue at W. 9th Street. The traffic pattern will remain changed until at least Saturday, July 10, as Huntington fire officials determine the stability of a burned structure.
The Big Eagle Building, 903 Washington Avenue, caught fire shortly before 3 a.m. Friday morning. A portion of the roof collapsed during the blaze that engulfed the second floor which contained two apartments. One of the apartments was occupied. The family of three escaped uninjured.
On Friday, portions of the second floor exterior facing Washington Avenue were disassembled by hand. Although the second floor was a total loss, the first floor did not sustain fire damage.
About 6 p.m. Thursday evening, firefighters put out a fire --- now determined to have been intentionally set --- at a rear storage building next to Big Eagle and next to a two-story apartment building. Huntington firefighters contained that fire preventing its spread to the Big Eagle. The apartment building received exterior damage.
Big Eagle Publishing has been at the site for about 20 years. A neighborhood grocery ( at one time called Park ‘n’ Shop) was a former occupant of the first floor. It also was the scene of a fire, but not one that impaired the brick building’s structural integrity.
