Huntington, WV (HNN) – Based on the 2010-2020 Cabell County Educational Facilities Plan (CTFP), the following schools have been recommended for consolidation, closure or modifications. The public hearing is Tuesday, July 6, at 4:45 p.m. at the Cabell Board of Education Administration Building (Old Huntington East High School on Fifth Avenue)
Beverly Hills Middle School, which will be replaced by the consolidated Enslow Middle/Beverly Hills Middle behind Prestera Center, likely will become the “new” Geneva Kent Elementary School.
Davis Creek and Hite-Saunders Elementaries are recommended for consolidation due to Davis Creek’s challenge of a location on the “too small” Alt. Route 10 and Hite-Saunders has an adequate learning environment but does not contain adequate land for school functions.
Highlawn Elementary needs major upgrades. The report recommends construction of a new school on the grounds of the former Enslow Middle School.
Nichols and Ona Elementaries each need major upgrades; the report recommends that these two schools be consolidated into a new one.
Cox Landing and Culloden are recommended for additions and renovations.
Spring Hill Elementary receives good marks for an “elementary level” facility, but the report faults the site as too small for the student population and inadequate parking.
The report recommends that Meadows Elementary and Peyton Elementary be taken out of service. Altizer Elementary has suggested improvements, but the report does not specify how to remedy the challenges.
