Barboursville, WV (HNN) – Before holiday festivities could begin, teams at the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships worked to earn a spot in Monday's semifinals. Tomorrow's games will all be played at the Barboursville City Park in Barboursville, W.Va.
Saturday's fireworks in Huntington were just the inspiration Team America 95 Stripes (VA) needed to win their third match of the Region I Championships and advance to tomorrow's semifinals. While Massachusetts' North Shore United took an early lead with in the 13th minute, Team America wasn't ready to let go of their perfect record. Wylie Alvarenga and Jorge Calix's goals gave Team America reason to celebrate today.
The Under-14 Boys HSC Arsenal (DE) and Nordic Soccer Club (VT) game remained scoreless through the first half. Delaware was determined not to go home with a draw and needed only 10 minutes to score three goals and win today's match. Calvin Smick scored two goals and Nicolas Musacchio scored one.
With their first win of the week, Empire United SA Rochester's (NY-W) win over MCU Maniacs (ME) wasn't enough to send them to the Under-14 Boys semifinals. The Maniacs struck first in the 11th minute, but Empire came back strong scoring three goals in the first half. Two additional goals gave Empire the 5-1 win today.
LVU United 95 (E-PA) finished round robin play at the top of their Under-14 Boys bracket, but it was a fight to the top with HBC Devils (NY-E). Today's game ended in a tie and goal differential decided who advances. The Devils went up by two in the first half, but the second half held promise for LVU as they changed course. Fighting for a spot in the semifinals, Jordon Ellison and Elijah Bartholomew each made game changing goals. Tomorrow, LVU will play the OBGC Rangers (MD).
Under-16 Girls Kirkwood Freedom (DE) gave their all today over Rhode Island's Jamestown Fortuna. While Kirkwood won 4-2, it wasn't enough to upset Quickstrike FC 94 (NY-E) who won all three preliminary matches. Today Kirkwood went up by two in the first 10 minutes putting Jamestown on their heels. Jamestown's Emily McClaron and Margot Godley brought their game to a tie, but in the final 11 minutes Kirkwood finished strong going up by two for the 4-2 win.
Quickstrike FC 94 won their third match of the week with a decisive 3-0 victory over West Virginia's Lady Stingers Elite. Mallory Peterson put Quickstrike ahead in the first half and then Kimberly Sharo scored twice in the second. Tomorrow Quickstrike and Buffalo Soccer Academy Invaders (NY-W) play in the semifinals.
Eastern New York's Albertson 93 Fury won their first game of the tournament 5-0 over Nordic Premier (VT) today. The top scorers of the match were Rosemarie Hayes, who put her team up by two, and Jillian Mulholland whose hat trick in the second half secured Albertson's win. Despite their best efforts, Albertson did not claim a spot in the semifinals.
Buffalo Soccer Academy Under-16 Girls stepped on the field today knowing that they needed a tie or a win to move past Baltimore Bays and into the Region I semifinals. Maryland started the high scoring game off with a goal in the 18th by Bethany Brisone but Buffalo's Alexis Koral responded with a goal of her own only 10 minutes later. Jenna Panepino scored two more for Buffalo and the evenly matched game ended 3-4.
