Huntington, WV (HNN) – Huntington Police Chief Skip Holbrook has issued a press release on the Wednesday, June 30, shooting at 5:30 a.m. of a victim shot accidentally by an off-duty officer.
According to Holbrook, Justin Kinder, 25, received a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. His status is good and his injuries are not life threatening.
Officer Daniel Wiles’ personal gun went off accidentally hitting his friend, Kinder, the release states.
Huntington Police say "the circumstances surrounding the event are undetermined at this time. Criminal and administrative investigations will be conducted by the Huntington Police Department.... The purpose of the criminal investigation is to determine if any violations of the law have occurred. The Office of Professional Standards will conduct the administrative investigation; the Criminal Investigations Unit, Crimes Against Persons Unit will conduct the criminal investigation.
Investigation results will determine the next course of action, Holbrook’s statement said.
According to the police incident report, Kinder said the only thing he remembered was hearing a loud noise that sounded like a gun shot, and then he realized he'd been shot. The report did not mention that any other people were present at the time of the shooting.
Wiles, a member of HPD for one year, is now on administrative leave, which is standard practice following a shooting incident. The off-duty officer is believed to have accompanied his friend to the hospital prior to reporting the incident, a published report said.
