Huntington, WV (HNN) - His unfathomable yet contrasting traits ranged from playing a fiddle to a copy of the United States Constitution in his pocket. Known for bringing home bacon (that non constituents called pork), his name adorns bridges, courthouses and government buildings throughout his beloved Mountain State.

The frailties of age weakened his body, but his oratory continued as a cane and wheelchair rolled into the U.S. Senate chambers.

Robert C. Byrd, the longest serving senator in history passed away Monday, June 28. Here are a few comments on Sen. Byrd made prior to the Monday meeting of Huntington City Council:

JIM INSCO, council chairman: “It’s a sad day for our state. Thoughts and prayers are with his family. Sen. Byrd was a champion not only for the State of West Virginia but for the City of Huntington. The State at the end of the day will miss him more than we know. May he rest in peace.

SCOTT CASERTA, council member: “It breaks my heart to see a man of his stature pass away. Sen. Byrd was a fighter for WV. He brought a lot of money and respect that was needed over the years. You can never replace him. You can replace the seat, but you can never replace Sen. Byrd. I’m glad over the last few months I got to go to D.C. and visit his office and stand in front of the life size painting he’s got on his wall. It was an awesome feeling to be in his office. He will be sorely missed.

DANNY PLYBON, American Federation State County and Municipal Employees Local 598: “You know, I’m a Republican, but I voted for the best person. I voted for Sen. Byrd on several occasions. He did a lot of good for WV. He made some good votes and some bad votes. I think he represented our state really well. He brought a lot of money into this state that probably nobody else could have done.

BRANDI JACOBS JONES, Director of Administration and Finance: “All the citizens of the State of West Virginia had a tremendous loss with the passing of Sen. Byrd. We here in Huntington as well as the state have benefitted from his leadership, not only from the Senator himself but the aides in his office.

DAVID DANIEL, KYOVA LOCAL US POSTAL EMPLOYEES: “… we have one less vote to help us in the Senate.”
