Huntington, WV (HNN) – Mexican food has not spawned successful restaurants at Pullman Square. Moe’s attracted a following, but the franchise kept getting into trouble with the landlord. Even, a new name on a tweaked format did not last long.

Forget ole Mexico. Coupled with the Jamie Oliver healthy eating machine that put what’s in the food on many diners minds, here comes a popular Teays Valley eatery that specializes in healthy ethnic foods.

The Thai House, which at one time had a Dunbar location, has inexpensive nutritious lunch specials at the Winfield venue. One combo offers a soup or side house salad, crab Rangoon and a soft drink for $2.95.

Their rice, veggie and fruit combo offer opportunities to try some mixed dishes in the same style that Chef Oliver added several items with a sauce to create a better tasting healthy dish.

So what’s on the Thai House menu?

How about Panaeng curry paste in coconut milk, bell pepper, and greet beans topped with ground peanut? Or, stir-fried cashew nut with onion, water chestnut, mushroom and bell pepper? They have sautéed fresh garlic and black pepper steamed with mixed veggies or stir friend ginger , onion, mushroom and bell pepper.

Other dishes that likely will be new to the Huntington market --- Duck Noodle Soup (slices of roast duck, rice noodle, bean sprout, green onion and garlic oil in broth), Pineapple Fried Rice (jasmine rice stir-fried with pineapple, onion, carrot, tomato and egg) or maybe Peanut Sauce (sautéed peanut honey sauce served over bed of steamed mixed veggie).

Any of these dishes are $5.95. For an extra dollar add chicken, beef, or pork with shrimp or squid.

Their house specialities include Tiger Tear, Pineapple Duck, Sweet & Sour Groper, Gang Dang Salmon and Basil Duck. New menu items are Bangkok salad with grilled salmon or angel shrimps.

Among the basic ingredients of Thai cooking are Chilies, garlic, kaffir lime, lemongrass, mint, onion, sesame seeds, sweet basil, holy basil, peppercorns, lime and ginger juice.

Their website has a health section stressing the important of a balanced five food group diet: “For the body to get the needed dietary requirements it is important to balance the diet with all five food groups which include protein, carbohydrates, fate, minerals and vitamins. Food varies in the availability of necessary nutrients. Thus it is important to eat a variety of food from each group so that the body will fulfill its dietary requirements.”

Coffee drinkers will rejoice. The site states that your favorite java has healthy consequences: “In addition to the well accepted benefit of boosting perkiness, reducing fatigue of the muscles and increasing short term memory, studies have shown that coffee can reduce the headache that accompanies migraines as well as symptoms of asthma. Research has shown that coffee can reduce gallbladder stone problems in men plus reduce chances of diabetes in men and women. Drinking the right amount of coffee can prevent major illness, such as cirrhosis of the river, heart disease, and cancer of the colon, bladder and liver.”
