Huntington, WV (HNN) - Marshall University is once again set to host the opening ceremonies of the 2010 US Youth Soccer Region I Championships. The tournament is scheduled to commence on Thursday, July 1 at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. The Championship series will run through July 6th with games scheduled to take place at Barboursville City Park and the Scott Orthopedic Soccer Complex.
The National Championship culminates a year-long tournament that has produced elite club teams of various age groups from Under-12 to Under-19.
"I am excited to have such a talented group of teams and athletes on campus and playing so nearby,” Marshall University women’s soccer head coach Kevin Long said. “This is an extremely well run tournament and it is great fun to see teams demonstrating such sportsmanship and competitiveness at its highest levels."
Action will begin with round robin play on Friday, July 2 through Sunday, July 4. Semifinal match-ups will compete on Monday, July 5, followed by the finals on Tuesday, July 6.
Winners from Region I will move on to compete in the 2010 US Youth Soccer National Championship on July 20-25 in Overland Park, Kan.
Region I includes 15 state association teams from; Connecticut, Delaware, Eastern New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York West, Pennsylvania West, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia, all of whom will be traveling to Barboursville to participate.
