Huntington, WV (HNN) – Huntington Mayor Kim Wolfe has announced that in coping with unprecedented financial times that City Hall will close Fridays, beginning July 1. Employees funded through the ‘general fund’ will go to a nine or ten hour four day schedule. The furloughs will be prevented, but 10% pay cuts, early retirements, and not filling vacant positions will occur.

These changes will save approximately $425,000.

Earlier, the administration proposed implementation of an occupation tax on income of people working inside the city. However, constituents speaking either in person or through email or phone calls fervently opposed the occupation tax.

Huntington City Council has now shifted to consider a one percent sales tax, but procedurally, if passed, the first monies from the sales tax could take six to nine months before collection.

In addition, a decrease in the number of jobs in the city has impacted user fee collections. Having 1,500 jobs lost has resulted in a $300,000 user fee collection reduction. A “significant slowdown” in Construction B & O collections have taken the largest hit -- - $1.8 million dollars in revenue.

The Police and Fire Departments will be unaffected by these reductions. Others not impacted Sanitation and Trash Enterprise Fund, Huntington Municipal Parking Board (HMPB), Trash Enterprise Fund, and Community Development Block Grant funded positions, Ms. Jacobs-Jones said.

Divisions that will be affected are: the Mayor's Office, Legal, Finance, Human Resources, Purchasing, Inspections and Compliance, Motor Pool, Floodwall, Building Maintenance, Traffic Engineering, Streets, and City Clerk's Office.
