Huntington, WV (HNN) – Started in 2003 as an event for inductees to “celebrate with their family while they are alive,” Tim Millne, a lifetime achievement award winner for the Southwestern District Labor Council, announced plans for the 2010 Hall of Fame Dinner. The event takes place Saturday, June 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Big Sandy Superstore Arena Conference Center.

“We are anticipating between 300 to 350 people to attend,” Millne said. The dinner began in 2003, but quickly outgrew the Local 40 Steelworkers Hall.

This year the first of two Labor Hall of Fame’s life time achievement awards for community service will go to Hon. David Pancake. The Republican judge has been selected for his fairness, by the non-partisan SWDLC. He is a former partner of Lafe C. Chafin, an attorney who was a friend to workers throughout his career.

Millne explained that the selection which must be approved through the council’s nomination process and executive committee does not emphasize wins and losses in business disputes. “We ask were they fair to us, not just unions, but [to] we [who] are the voice of people that do not have a voice in the workforce.” Whether a judge, magistrate or politician, the organization recognizes annually recognizes one whom the council feels has been “fair” and the award represents a “thumbs up” from the non-partisan organization.

Among the prior Lifetime Achievement Award members have included A.W. “Bud” Clark, Randolph Jordan, William K. Harrah, Jack McComas, Alan Hutchinson and Leo Spry. (Click on this link to view a full listing: http://www.swdlc.org/honors.html.

Teresa Ball, retired representative of the AFL-CIO/ Working America (SEIU Local 1199), will be honored also with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 ceremony.

Paula Simpson, Corps of Engineers (AFGE), and, Brent Gray, business manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #317 are the 2010 Hall of Fame inductees.

Millne said the labor council also honors businesses as partners. Seeking to overcome predominant “us against them” mentalities, the council believes the aggressive across the table adversarial mode should be reserved for negotiations. Businesses cannot exist without workers and workers need jobs offered by business. The council recognizes this respect and partnership, Millne said.

Union workers place their employers or an organization in nomination for “honorary” membership in the Labor Hall of Fame. Neighborgall Construction (Charles R. Neighborgall III) and Rahall Transportation Institute (Bob Plymale) are the 2010 inductees.

Millne noted the Rahall Institute has been responsible for “all kinds of jobs,” ranging from intermodal jobs at Prichard to capital improvements at Marshall University. Neighborgell is the oldest construction company in the U.S. and now has gone into the fifth generation of local ownershipn. “One of their finest projects is the new Alumni Center at Marshall University,” Millne said.

Previous Honorary winners have been Steve Kopp (Marshall University President), Vicki Shaffer (TTA), Kate McGuire (United Way of the River Cities) and Congressman Nick Rahall.

In addition, the council continues seeking previous workers at Huntington’s Owens-Illinois and other local industries who may with proof of prior employment be eligible for Hall of Fame membership.
