Survivors, Governor, Rahall, Rockefeller Testifying in Beckley on Massey Mine Disaster

Beckley, WV (HNN) – The U.S. House Education and Labor Committee, chaired by Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) will hold a field hearing Monday, May 24, at 9 a.m. at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. The inquiry is a continuation of the investigation into the April 5 explosion at Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch Mine in Montcoal, where 29 miners perished and others were injured.

Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV) will deliver opening remarks for the hearing entitled, “The Upper Big Branch Mine Tragedy: Testimony of Family Members.”
 
In addition to family members, WV Governor Joe Manchin and Sen. Jay Rockefeller will testify.
 
The House hearing follows a Senate hearing Thursday, May 20, in which WV Sen. Robert C. Byrd lashed out at both the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and at Massey Energy CEO, Don Blankenship.
 
Sen. Byrd does not plan to attend the Beckley hearing.
