Special to Huntingtonnews.net
Ashland, KY (HNN) -- Jazz Alley returns by popular demand to the Paramount Arts Center this summer with four great performances showcased in an intimate cabaret on the theater stage!
Jeff Flanagan & Friends is our first show on Friday, June 11 at 8. If you love New Orleans style jazz, Dixieland and hot jazz, you won’t want to miss this first show. Jeff Flanagan will unite 7 musicians from 4 states on stage to showcase the traditional music that was the birth of jazz at the turn of the century. This group of musicians, often united as River Cities Jazz, has performed with jazz greats across the country including Bob Thompson and Greg Abate.
A Swingin’ Affair will be on our stage on Friday, July 9 at 8. This concert features Steve Snyder & Sean Parsons. Funky jazz, soul jazz or jazz-fusion are just a few of the terms to describe this Swingin’ Affair event. Steve Snyder brings his Hammond B3 organ to the stage and is joined by Sean Parsons on piano and Ken Tackett on drums. This group will deliver sounds of funk, soul and R&B with songs from the Great American Songbook.
The Bob Thompson Quartet will be here on Friday, August 13 at 8. You will not want to miss legendary pianist Bob Thompson with what he calls junk—his own style of jazz and funk. Thompson has been performing on stages throughout the world for the past 30 years and is heard regularly on Public Radio International and is a regular on Mountain Stage Radio Show. From his early days with the Modern Jazz interpreters to an acclaimed series of solo albums on labels like Capital and Ichiban to his latest work with the Bob Thompson Unit, Thompson has won the respect and praise of jazz critics and fans throughout the world. The quartet features John Ingrham, Ryan Kennedy and Tim Courts with a unique jazz style that is funky, swings and pulls at your heartstrings. Thompson’s latest album, “Homeland” features tunes like “Little One,” “Summertime” and “Reunion.”
The Greg Abate Quartet will be performing on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 8. Jazz gets progressive when the Greg Abate Quartet unites for the first time at the Paramount Arts Center. Greg Abate is an internationally acclaimed popular jazz powerhouse who will absolutely not let hard driving bebop die and is touted as one of the most exciting players around today, Abate (pictured) is a jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer and tours the globe 150 days a year as an International Jazz/Recording Artist. Abate has played with many of the greats including a two-year stint with Ray Charles Orchestra. The Chicago Tribune said, “Abate is not content to rely on stock bebop riffs and standard chord progressions. His work is a constant invention of creativity.”
Tickets to the shows are $20 for adults, $10 for kids, $60 for a seat at all 4 shows, $500 for a table at all four shows. This event is sponsored by Community Trust Bank. For tickets call the box office at 606.324.3175 ext. 2 or go to www.paramountartscenter.com. Become a friend on facebook.
