Revamped Cabell Summer School Program to Better Gauge Students’ Knowledge
Special to Huntingtonnews.net
Cabell County Schools' summer program is undergoing major changes this year. High school students who have failed an English, math, science, social studies, or health will have the opportunity to recover credit as in past years. However, this year they will prove what they know and understand about the curriculum through an online program call PLATO.
Students will be able to work at their own pace, but must either pass each unit test with eighty percent accuracy or complete the unit. Classes will be held Tuesday through Thursday, June 22 through July 29, from 7:45-1:15 daily at the Cabell County Career Technology Center. Students will choose hours that suit them.
Parents will be required to pay a fee depending on the number of courses (up to three) for which the student enrolls.
Students in eighth grade who are not promoted may be recommended by their principals to participate in the program, receiving instruction in reading and math at no cost. Eighth grade students who need additional help will receive individual instruction.
Third grade students who are identified by their teachers and principal for extra help in reading and math may be enrolled in the Third Grade Critical Skills Summer School at Village of Barboursville Elementary. There is no cost for participation. This program runs Tuesday through Thursday, June 22 through July 29, from 8:30-11:30.
Cabell County summer schools are only open to students currently enrolled in Cabell County Schools. Lunch will be provided for students in all three programs. However, transportation is only available for third grade students. Registration for all three summer school programs will be completed by the student's counselor or principal between May 17 and June 11. For more information, parents may contact their child's principal or counselor.
