Washington, DC (HNN) -- The House Education and Labor Committee announced Monday, May 10, 2010 that the committee will hold a field hearing in Beckley, West Virginia on the worst mining tragedy in the U.S. in almost four decades. On April 5, an explosion at Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch Mine in Montcoal, West Virginia killed 29 miners and injured others.
The hearing will take place Monday, May 24, at 9 a.m. at the Robert C. Byrd U.S. Courthouse, Courtroom 310, 110 North Heber Street, Beckley, WV.
Witness will include testimony from family members of those killed or injured in the UBB explosion.
According to the release from the Committee on Education & Labor, “Due to the off-site location of this hearing, there will be no webcast, video or photos.”
Also, on Monday, May 10, the United Mine Workers and the families of Ronald Maynor and William Griffith filed suit in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of W.Va. requesting a court order barring representatives of the Mine Safety and Health Administration from conducting witness interviews, unless representatives of families and miners are present.
The complaint asks that there be a formal public hearing on the tragedy.
MSHA and director Joe Main are named as defendants.
In addition, Mountain Justice, an environmental group, plans to picket Massey Energy’s annual meeting to be held May 18 in Richmond, Va.
