Huntington, WV (HNN) – U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) gave the commencement address at the newly-named Mountwest Community College to outline the 21st Century challenges facing the graduating class of 2010. The college held its inaugural graduation ceremony Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Keith Albee Theater, since name-affiliation divestiture with Marshall University.
In his remarks, Rahall said: “The US Department of Labor now predicts those leaving college today will have 13 careers in their work lifetimes,” notes Rahall. “Technology, the sciences, knowledge itself is so dramatically changing that five of those 13 careers don’t yet exist. So the challenge before us is as immense as it is intriguing to good old fashioned American ingenuity.”
“Our economy, American careers, our country’s jobs have undergone immense and dramatic changes,” Rahall states. “The march of technology has sent American jobs marching off to other shores. This college is an answer to that – graduating a workforce rising in skills and education, leading to a high quality of life for many, many more workers.”
