Huntington, WV (HNN) – HNN has received a statement from Marshall University Chief of Staff Matt Turner that the Thayer Group and Brad Burgess MAY have expressed interest in a past university dormitory project. A North Carolina newspaper story indicated that the company had completed university mixed-use projects for universities in Huntington, WV and Cincinnati.

The company proposed a $50 million dollar development to the Cabell County Commission Thursday and received permission to make an application for recovery bonds. The details of the planned project were not made public.

County Manager Stephen Zoeller explained to HNN that the vote by the Cabell Commission Thursday, April 29, did not commit any taxpayer funds or provide a contact. Instead, Burgesss and Keith McGuire of Commercial Property Resources asked Commission President Scott Bias for support of the federal Recovery Zone Facility Bond application. The commission adopted the resolution by a 3-0 vote.

Since Turner, previously a press aide for Gov. Joe Manchin, has just taken over as chief of Staff from Bill Bissett, HNN asked David Wellman, a long time member of the university's communication department about recollections of a project with either of the mentioned parties.

Wellman -- after reading the Fayetteville Observer notation sent to him via email -- e-mailed HNN that he “did not think so” in response to having knowledge of Thayer connected with a Marshall project.

Previously, HNN research discovered that the Thayer Group had listed one or more signature projects in a Findlay, Ohio, presentation that were developed by Madison Marquette Realty Partners, L.L.C., based on a phone conversation with Whitney Livingston of Madison Marquette’s San Francisco office.
