Houston Tops Herd Softball 5-3, 3-2
Telles records two homers on the day

Huntington, WV (HNN) – The University of Marshall softball team (24-27, 3-17 C-USA) dropped two games to Houston on Saturday afternoon, May 1 in a doubleheader at Dot Hicks Field. The Herd fell 5-3 in game one and would drop a close 3-2 decision in game two.

“Katie and Caitlyn did their job for us on the mound today,” said head coach Shonda Stanton. “We were plagued with key errors that were the difference in both games.”
 
In game one, Houston (28-22, 12-10 C-USA) jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first frame after a double by Reina Gaber scored Ashleigh Jones and Katy Beth Sherman; Sherman’s run went unearned.
 
The Thundering Herd would manufacture a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Melissa Loesing came home in a Caitlyn Jackson at-bat.
 
Houston then intentional walked Rebecca Gamby to load the bases, putting runners in scoring position for Jazmine Valle. Valle then reached by the way of walk to push home Jessica Hughes and tie the game at 2-2.
 
The Cougars edged a 3-2 advantage in the fourth as Angela Spittler came home, unearned, on a Marshall error.
 
Alianna Telles would answer in the fifth, leading off with a homer to left center to knot the game at 3-3. Telles would finish the game 2-for-4 at the dish.
 
UH would take the lead for the third time in the top of the sixth after Mary Tyler Dobson scored on a Jennifer Klinkert double, making it a 4-3 game. Klinkert would stretch the Cougar lead to 5-3 as she came home on a Jones RBI hit up the middle.
 
Katie Murphree garnered the loss, after going the distance with six strikeouts. She now moves to 15-15 on the year. Bailey Watts picked up the win for Houston to improve her record to 13-9.
 
Houston opened game two with Sherman scoring, unearned, in a Brooke Lathan at-bat to take a 1-0 lead after the first frame.
 
For the second time of the day, Telles would step up and tie the game, 1-1, via a solo-long ball in the bottom of the first. With both homers on Saturday, Telles leads the club with a team-high 12 home runs on the year.
 
“I was pleased to see Alianna come around offensively and perform to her ability,” Stanton said.
 
The score would remain knotted until the top of the fifth when Sherman scored on a RBI-shot through the left side from Klinkert to give UH a 2-1 edge. The Cougars would then make it 3-1 in the sixth after Baillie Lott scored unearned off a Marshall error.
 
Valle would close the gap at 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a home run down the left line. The homer is her eighth of the season.
 
The Herd eventually fell 3-2 with Jackson (6-11) taking the loss after pitching a complete game and striking out seven along the way.
 
“It has not been about a lack of effort, we just have not made the key defensive play or had the clutch hit when we have needed it,” said Stanton.
 
Amanda Crabtree tallied the win for UH, striking out 10 to move her record to 11-10.
 
Marshall will close the three-game conference series against Houston on Sunday, May 2, at 11 a.m.
