Huntington Public Works to Expand Citizen Support Center to Engage Public Participation

By Huntingtonnews.net Staff

Huntington, WV (HNN) - According to Acting Public Works Director Brandi Jacobs-Jones three new requests have been added to the Citizen Support Center at the City of Huntington’s website (www.cityofhuntington.com) to enlist public opinion for improving city services. These new requests are Paving, Brick Streets and Traffic Signal-Timing.

Jacobs-Jones said that Assistant Public Works Director Kit Anderson is attempting to use public input as one of many factors to develop a street paving plan to begin this July. Both residents and non-residents can offer their input on which Huntington roads should be paved.

Also, Anderson is looking for neighborhoods who would like to nominate their streets to serve as a pilot project for removing asphalt to uncover brick streets. The purpose of the pilot project is to determine if brick street recovery can be a feasible, long-term strategy for the City.

Anderson, with the help of Traffic Engineering Supervisor Steve Riggs, also launched a Traffic Signal-Timing request to allow constituents to identify traffic lights that have poor timing between green and red signals.

To date, citizens have submitted 22 questions through the online Citizen Support Center. Answers in the center’s FAQ database have been viewed 2,174 times, with “How do I report a pot hole on the street?” the most frequently visited question.

Not surprisingly, the repair of potholes is the most common request received through the Citizen Support Center. Of the 742 requests submitted to the City from February, when the online center was unveiled, through April 21, 240 have been for pothole repairs, followed by 83 to report unkempt properties, 77 for alley grading and graveling, and 65 to request pickup of brush and yard waste.
