St Albans, WV (HNN) – Women who worked in the defense industries during World War II have come together with the veterans organization, Thanks Plain and Simple, to begin work on a Rosie the Riveter community. The meeting will be Friday, April 23 at 1:15 p.m. in the Hansford Senior Citizen Center, 500 Washington Avenue, St. Albans.

Art will be displayed that has been created by “Rosies” from Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation and WV Humanities Council grants. Plans and grant applications have been initiated for developing the first Rosie the Riveter community that allows the Rosies themselves to work in historic preservation.

Dale Withrow, president of the Greater St. Albans Partnership, said, “We look forward to developing the first Model Rosie the Riveter Community for this region and America. Many organizations will cooperate in honoring and learning from these outstanding women.”

One of the goals remains locating and speaking with surviving Rosies in West Virginia and across America. To illustrate the significance of this segment of American and women’s history, several “Rosies” will be on hand to display artworks and discuss their legacy.
