Huntington, WV (HNN) – Let’s get the ratings interpretation correct. Or, at least, ABC’s spin on Jamie’s viewers.
“Food Revolution” has been a Friday winner for its network, ABC, particularly since it has been four years to when the network was competitive on that night of the week.
Network television ratings have dipped overall (in competition with cable), but the demographic (audience segment watching) can mean more than the full audience tally. Thus, even though losing about a half a million overall viewers, “Jamie Oliver”s” two-hour (8-10 p.m.) lead in for the network’s “20/20” tied ABC with NBC for a Friday night, April 16, win in the significant Adults 18-49 age group. NBC’s movie/pilot, “Secrets of the Mountain” lead in the first two hours of prime time, but “20/20” won the 10 p.m. slot.
Oliver has for the second week topped the Adult 18-34 demographic and has for four weeks maintained a hold on Women 18-34.
The total household and overall ratings put “Jamie Oliver” in a lower range, however. as the night’s Nielsen Company chart indicated:
8 p.m.
NBC: "Secrets of the Mountain" (7.5 million viewers, 4.6 rating /9 households)
CBS: "Ghost Whisperer" rerun (4.4 million, 3.0/6)
ABC: "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" rerun (3.0 million viewers, 2.1 rating/4 households)
FOX: "House" rerun (3.0 million, 2.1/4)
The CW: "Smallville" (1.9 million, 1.2/2)
9 p.m.
NBC: "Secrets of the Mountain" (8.2 million, 4.9/9)
CBS: "Medium" rerun (4.7 million, 3.2/6)
ABC: "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" (4.1 million viewers, 2.7 rating/5 households)
FOX: "Kitchen Nightmares" rerun (3.2 million, 2.1/4)
The CW: "America's Next Top Model" rerun (1.5, 1.0/2)
In addition, show business “Bible” Variety had reported Jamie’s March debut episode as in its words having “ABC really cooking.” So, hot, as to bring the network it’s highest Friday night viewership for a regular series since the Fall of 2006.
The first episode “finished a strong second” to college basketball on CBS, then, topped “Kitchen Nightmares” (Fox) and “Dateline” (NBC).
As the Village Voice put it, “even if a bunch of school kids don’t care for his cooking, plenty of viewers seem to want to eat up what Jamie Oliver is serving” having lured 7.5 million viewers to its premier episode on ABC (per Variety).
