Greenup Locks Closed Again on Ohio River
Special to Huntingtonnews.net
Huntington, WV (HNN) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has again closed the Greenup Locks to traffic on the Ohio River in order to assess the condition of the damaged miter gate on the lock's main chamber.
The auxiliary lock at Greenup was opened to traffic Saturday afternoon, and seven tows were locked through.
The Corps has been monitoring the effect of lockages, river levels and temperature on the damaged gate. The results of these monitoring efforts led the Corps to close the auxiliary chamber again Sunday morning. Additional tests are needed before the auxiliary chamber can be reopened to traffic.
Navigation was originally closed at the locks Wednesday afternoon when the anchorage bar that supports one of the miter gates on the lower end of the main lock chamber broke.
It's estimated that it will take six to eight weeks to complete repairs on the main lock miter gate. Until then, the main lock chamber at Greenup will be closed to river traffic.
As of Monday at 8:45 a.m., 23 tows were waiting to lock through at Greenup. The Corps is working with towing industry representatives to prioritize the tows waiting to lock through.
There are two lock chambers at Greenup - the main chamber (which is 110 feet by 1200 feet long) and the auxiliary chamber (which is 110 feet wide by 600 feet long).
