EDITOR’S NOTE: We have previously offered a verbatim and other reports of a September 5 altercation involving teens at Pullman Square. We have ran a story, as did the H-D, from the HPD /City of Huntington perspective. Since incidents at the downtown shopping center are rare, HNN now offers a background look at the security firm which ensures safety and a good time at the Square. For the record, HNN visited the Square Friday and Saturday evening, Sept. 11-12 and during a two hour period observed no continuation(s) of the problems from the week beforehand. Shoppers and strollers found a musical, yet quiet, laid back atmosphere which has been the norm for PS and other urban centers of its type.
Huntington, WV (HNN) – While the teen disturbance incident brought opportunities for some pro active security adjustments, the Square has a contract with a firm that provides assistance and surveillance for malls, but also for corporate campuses, the 1996 & 2002 Olympics, the Country Club Plaza (Kansas City, an 18 city block mixed-use lifestyle development), chemical, utility and manufacturing center, and high profile events. Checking the website, Chesley Brown International , has a distinguished history and reputation as a “premiere” global security management company.
In fact, a December 2008 article in the Herald Dispatch indicated that serious crime has been virtually non-existent for tenants at Pullman. Prior to the cinema robbery on a busy weekend, the only incident of serious criminal behavior had been $950 removed from an unlocked safe at Empire Books and News. Following the robbery, off-duty police officers have been added for busy weekends at the theatre, which Brent Brown , chairman and CEO of Chesley Brown International had suggested in the article.
Brown’s company has clients in 30 states and three foreign counties.
Based on their website, the company uses security variations depending upon a venue’s needs, which range from remote camera monitoring coupled with guards walking a perimeter. Cameras feed into the company’s corporate headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., where the company operates a rigorous training program called Chesley Brown University with a focused curriculum of course work designed to reinforce the company’s policies and procedures.
“Securing commercial real estate and corporate facilities is a field that becomes more complex and demanding every day. It’s not enough to just have patrolling security guards. Your property’s security function must be truly managed not just staffed with personnel,” the web site explains.
REMOTE CAMERA MONITORING
The company has developed an approach to surveillance that sends feeds of camera’s at client venues into the main control room of Chesley Brown International in Atlanta, Ga. The company monitors sensitive information too --- from a missing child to a string of organized shoplifters, from criminal activity to national disaster and terrorist alerts.
According to a 2006 press release, their corporate Security Advisory Messenger represents their one more tool in achieving their “always vigilant” goal.
“Before S.A.M., it could take hours to notify every tenant at a commercial property that a child had been lost or class A office building complex that a suspicious person had been spotted in the building. Now, S.A.M. can notify them all within minutes and all tenants can be placed on alert in a variety of situations. S.A.M. is also used to notify tenants of Homeland Security Threat Condition changes, severe weather warnings, civil unrest, protesters on the premises, organized shoplifters, disgruntled employees, incidents of workplace violence, natural disasters, or any other emergency situations that may require immediate attention. S.A.M. is used extensively in conjunction with Homeland Security initiatives, and is based at the Chesley Brown International headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia,” the release said.
From the National Command Center in Kansas City , Mo., news and weather services are monitored. During an event, the Corporate Command Center works with the on-site security director and support staff.
The company has customized security solutions too. For instance, at the large Kansas City lifestyle center, they use a security guard walking with a black lab. Named ‘Rex’, the canine is primarily a public relation tool.
